Strip: Taping inner seam with one layer?

Has anyone ever tried taping the inner seam with just one layer of 9 oz. tape rather than 2 layers of lighter tape? I have never used just one layer before, but I inadvertantly ordered the 9 oz. instead of 6 oz. It occured to me that it may be strong enough by itself. Any experience with it?
