Ya... Flourescent lights have a good amount of UV. That does discolor wood, & the longer they are exposed, the deeper the discoloration, After a while the color change is deeper & will not sand off unless ya sand deep. Sun light is MUCH harsher, Direct sun will discolor unprotected wood in hours.
The PVC tube idea is great, carpet comes on 12' to 15' carboard rolls that will protect your strips.... I would. ( At least the ones I don't step on.)
