Here is a photo of a hatch tab pull that is inserted through the hatch cover itself (rather than under the edge of the hatch). This can be used in lieu of a hatch finger recess. It might be a little easier to open the hatch with this system during the cold winter months when the fingers are a bit numb - or maybe not. Anyway, it is another option for opening the lid.
