That is what I did on the hatch covers on the boat I just finished. They work well and are not too obtrusive. I really don't see how everyone is able to pull up on the hatch very well with only a finger recess if there is tension from below. I used the internal bungee method and it takes quite a bit of pull to lift the hatch. Maybe I have the bungee tied too tight,but the hatches are water tight. I guess it would not be an issue with straps over the top.
