I can appreciate the tactic. I wanted this to be a project my daughter would enjoy, rather than a chore. I waited until she asked to build it (immediately after seeing others at SSTIKS). I didn't push hard when she didn't want to help and tried to get her as involved as possible when she did. She ended up involved a lot more than I had expected, which has led to her "owning" the boat. I also tried to involve her in all of the design decisions (color of boat, color of decklines, type of floats on the outrigger, etc.). It has been a really fun project.
As we were building, I was thinking what a great project that would be for a class to build for a social studies project over the course of a semester.
