Hey Wilf,
I am going in a different direction than your question suggested, but MAYBE if you consider it it MAY be an answer.
For my money (and work) I would see the multi piece 'solution' as much more of a problem than a solution. I am NOT saying it couldn't be done, I am saying it is far from anything good (unless the 2 or 3 piece version is ACTUALLY needed for traveling AFTER it is out of the shop).
I noted you wrote about 3 very small windows. I am a builder so that is what I would check out first. Can one or more of these windows be enlarged? OR can 2 (or all 3) windows be re-framed to become one larger window? If you know some one who has some experience with framing and windows he could tell you if it looks like an easy job. I can tell you that this is a potentially good or bad option. But if you check in to it is just might be a good 'solution' for you. I hope so. I would not be surprised if some of the guys here can tell you how to make a good boat in 3 pieces so I'll watch this thread, good Luk!

: I have been lurking on this board for quite some time now as I have become
: bitten by the kayak bug. I picked up a used Mainstream Streak 10 footer
: for fishing and banging around on the local lakes. I have to say, I love
: being in a kayak. As natural progression goes, I now want to move up to
: something longer & faster. I am very comfortable woodworking so I am
: thinking of a strip kayak. I have a huge workshop 24 X 36 feet (unfinished
: basement)BUT 3 very small basement windows. The only exit to the outside
: is up the stairs to the main floor and a 90 degree left turn out the back
: door. My 10 foot Streak makes it up the stairs and out the door, but just
: barely. I know for a fact that anything longer will not make it out of the
: house!
: I have seen plans for 2 and 3 piece kayaks. Basically most of the boat gets
: finished and then you summon up the courage to slice it in 3 parts to be
: re-assembled.
: I am looking for opinions on this technique..
