Hi all.

Like a few other folks, I spend the last few days before an R2K* event in a sleepy daze as I try to complete a project in time to take with me. This time it is a Pygmy Arctic Tern 14 which has been customized into a take-apart 3-piece kayak.

My starting point was the 1991 article in "Sea Kayaker" magazine on doing this to an all-glass boat, though it did seem overbuilt with about a dozen bolts holding each piece together. I did some re-thinking of it, and I also had some design help from an engineer who helped me understand the stresses involved and how to lighten the weight of the modifications.

So far, so good; it just won't be completely ready by tomorrow, is all. Rather than pull another all-nighter and risk screwing up from fatigue, I've simply had to accept that, again, I'll fall just a little short of my goal.

I'll be bringing it along to show, and (of course) yak about; it won't be ready to paddle, is all.

Cheers,

'Sleepy' Pete,
in Snohomish, WA
