I cut my mortises with a router in a stop jig.
Just goes to show you that there is more than one way to skin a cat besides sticking its head in a boot jack and jerking on its tail. (Sorry, a little Montana humor there)
I'm with Greg, though. Use whatever tools you think will make for an enjoyable process. If you're a "tool guy", get the mortising jig. Sometimes it's also enjoyable to do an entire project with hand tools (and this is a project where that is entirely possible).
