: "Hey", folks.
: I'm not ready for this step yet, but I was thinking ahead to end pours. I was
: thinking that instead of putting a bunch of filler in the epoxy mix, I'd
: wad up a bunch of single threads of glass into a fairly tight ball about
: the size of a baseball, shove that into the end with a long stick, and
: pour epoxy over it, letting it soak in all the way through. Maybe I'd do
: this in a couple passes to make sure that all the glass was soaked
: properly and compact to keep air pockets at bay.
: Couple question...
: 1. Anyone try that?
: 2. Seems stronger than filler. Wouldn't it be? Or, is it overkill?
: 3. If I had enough glass in there, would it be lite enough, or still too
: heavy?
I don't do endpours. I do all my filling before the deck and hull are put together. Then...when I put them together...I add a gob of epoxy goopie where the two halves mate...on the ends. I'm not sure if you would be able to get your wad of fiberglass wet out completely and seems like it might be more trouble than just a straight end pour. If it's not wet out completely I don't see that it would be any stronger...but...once you get to "strong enough" what more do you need? I have heard of others mixing some light weight fillers with epoxy and using that as an endpour. Styrofoam pulverized in a food blender and then mixed with epoxy comes to mind. I'm gonna have to check into perlite one of these days. There are more material to consider I guess. The wonders of life just never seem to cease. Once you carefully consider what you are wanting to do don't let the musing of a poor, senile, broken down old man sway you. I learn something new every day.
