: I am working on a Artic Tern from Pygmy. I recently placed the fiberglass on
: the hull and have just put the second coat of epoxy on. My problem is,
: where I first butted the joints together for each of the panels, the wood
: color is lighter than the rest of the boat. I was under the impression the
: color would blend together with a couple coats of epoxy. Will this line of
: lighter wood always be there? is there anything I can do to fix this?
: Thanks.
The tape issue described in other responses is one issue- I have very visible (to me) tape on my first two Pygmy's- I didn't use tape on the third, went with extra interior glass. There are lots of previous posts on variations. I wasn't too concerned with my current one, AT14, because the only butt joint,in the middle, doesn't take a lot of twist. Besides color, I could never get the light tape that Pygmy uses to wet out completely.
It sounds like you might be describing something else though, that I have on my Coho. The Coho has two butt joints/three sections along the length. The "tail" section of my boat, only about 18" long is uniformly and very distinctly lighter in color than the two long sections,ie,the whole rest of the boat. It's very odd to me that all eight panels of this one short sections are lighter than all sixteen panels of the rest of the hull. I've had people stop to admire the boat on the car racks, and then say " so how come you made the end light like that?" It must have to do with the sheet of plywood they came from. For the most part, Pygmy matches everything up pretty well. I'd like it better if it were all the same, but I've gotten over worrying about it. You will too.
