: Where do you guys get the forms for making the deck on a hybrid? For
: instance, say I wanted to make a hybrid Arctic Tern. Where would I get the
: forms?
If we are talking Squeedunk Arctic Tern, then you can derive a full set of
offsets from the vrml file, to make forms which exactly match the S+G deck.
However, an S+G design may be using a deck shape matched to the construction
technique, and you might prefer a shape more readily achievable with strips
that has some aerodynamic/aesthetic/other advantage. On my Hybrid Cormorant,
I matched the original deck heights to a reasonable approximation, but made
the deck section half-ellipse, with the same eccentricity throughout the
foredeck and another throughout the aft deck. The way I made the forms was
to decide where I wanted the forms; measure the beam at each position on the
hull (already glassed), and draw a half ellipse with a peak height 0.235
times the beam on the foredeck, and 0.175 times the beam on the aft deck.
The way I actually drew these forms was to take a circle in my drawing
package, and scale the height by 0.47 or 0.35, then scale the resulting
ellipse to the measured beam, then print out the top half onto A3 paper,
stick it to some scrap chipboard, cut it out, hot-melt-glue the form into
the hull and strip away.
You can see a couple of the forms on this photo - I chose too wide a spacing,
and would use a few more forms if I was doing it again, but the beauty of the
method is that for a pure half ellipse deck, you can have as many or as few
as you like. By matching the peak height to the height of the designed deck
(as derived from the Cormorant vrml file), I was pretty sure that I wouldn't
be changing the windage fore or aft, and the boat has proven to be a really
comfy fit for my knees under the foredeck.
