anyone know of any repository of information on homebuilt kayak damage, failure, survival? a previous flamer suggested that the ONLY way to assess the layup of a kayak was through engineering analysis. i think empiric data (even though it is anectdotal) is also very useful. an analysis of any incident that caused damage, and an attempt to related it to the type of kayak construction/layup/ etc. could help in understanding the limits of durability of what we build. additionally, significant accidents where little or no significant damage occurred could also be useful. the fact that many of you are putting your kayaks thru harsh day to day use with few reports of damage suggests that the building methods are satisfactory, but more details would be helpful. perhaps a collection such as in "deep trouble" or "accidents in north american mountaineering"
