This is a highly debatable question that depends on your skill level, comfort level and the conditions. Lake Superior can be unpredictable and unforgiving. I paddle lake Superior a lot and always dress for immersion. If I get to hot then I roll. I enjoy paddling when the air temperature is above 40. I use a hydroskin shorty on the nicest days in the summer and a 3mm farmerjohn, 2mm jacket, longsleeve hydroskin shirt, fuzzy rubber cap, 2mm sox and sealskin sox when the water temperature is 32. This works for me. Whatever you use you should practice rescues in it to know if your comfortable with it. Paddle safe and have fun.
