It’s a little hard to see but below is a photo of the plug for the hull of K1 racing kayak I have been working on this week as part of my apprenticeship. Each one foot section was milled out on an NC machine and epoxied together on a rail. I spent the better part of 12 hours with a longboard and metal rule fairing out high spots and re-priming it. This is early in the process when you can still see the joints between the blocks

While I had access to half a dozen air sanders, power long boards, high end planes and scraper it turns out that long boarding by hand is the best way to get a fair curve.

Next week we will lay up a carbon mold over the plug. You can see the autoclave on the far wall. It can bake a boat at multiple atmospheres to get better cross linking of the resin.
