Hmm... Well, I like Rob's idea But, I could always ask my lumber yard who they ordered it from... I went with full 20' boards for my (defunct ) Night Heron. And the boards that came in... They were perfect! The supplier knew exactly what I wanted and he gave it to me! Yup, that was costly enough compared to poplar. Especially around here (As in, I live next to a mill and they regularly throw away 14' poplar 1x4's.)

Still, the responses to your post almost inspire me to build my next 'yak out of poplar... I mean, what do I need to make a 'yak? I've got the poplar and a bunch of extra glass... I'd need some more resin and I'd be set... Maybe if I cut the boards to 3/16" and used a lot less resin then the weight wouldn't show... (Heck, my strip-built Cormorant 18 weighs ~55# - but I did do the entire deck in hardwoods the lightest of which was poplar.)
