Well, here's my tale of woe...

Done for the day. Throw the son's 15' Guillemot on top of the Jeep and head back down to the water (with the son) to get the double that my wife and I paddle. Hear a most horrifying crunch and know instantly that the Guillemot has fallen off the roof.

Was it a gust of wind? Did I not have it in the blocks? What happened??? I turn around expecting to see a pile of splinters, but remarkably the boat is still in one piece. My wife is standing next to the (now open) tailgate of the Jeep looking for all the world like a two year old who has just broken mommy's favorite trinket. She asks, sheepishly, "did I do that?"

She did, by opening the tailgate. She let go of it, it hit the unstrapped kayak, and rolled it off the roof. Damage is some slight splintering at the stern and lots of scratches.

Moral of the story is: I will tie down each boat as I load it, and the wife will pay much more attention when opening the tailgate.
