I just used a piece of pine I had laying around. If I was getting serious about the skeg I'd use ash or oak. I put about 10 miles on the kayak sunday with the skeg. My kayak is 16' long...but very wide with a lot of canoeish characteristics. I'm not sure if my design parameters have been satisfactorily met, or not. I've already seen several things to change from this prototype. Without the skeg the boat handled waves and rough water very well...as I mentioned...tracking straight through quartering seas (while paddling). Hopefully that characteristic hasn't changed with the addition of the skeg.
