I had same good experience with mahogany & ash cut into 1/16 inch strips (np steaming). I did have a couple split on me, but that was because the strips were not uniform (had some thin spots).
: I used maple cut into thin strips. I laminated 9 strips with epoxy to make
: the coaming rim. I did'nt need to steam and had no broken strips. The pic
