Right you are. The cleats are close enough that the paddle shaft does not rest on the deck peak. I can snatch the paddle quickly with one hand if need be. The bungee will self release. I aslo often carry a camera box on deck and I have a leash from it to the cleat. Works well to tie off fish or a fish bag as well.
