Yo might want to buy a cut off scrap of this wood and try gluing it, and also see how well it takes epoxy. A singe board foot shouldn't be too expensive. In fact, the lumber dealer might even give you a piece with some defects in it for free if you explain why you need it, and offer to share the results of your tests.

For that matter, the lumberyard could make use of a sample of any species of wood whih has been finished. This way they could show future prospective buyers what the wood looks like after using that finish. It might help them then sell more varnish. :)

It never hurts to ask for a small sample.
