Joe, I am so sorry for your terrible loss.
Two years ago I began building my boat right after my mother-in-law died (we were very, very close.) This was hard, knowing she would never get to see it. But I came to regard my progress on the boat as part of my passage through grief, and what began in the depths of my sadness took shape, and finally beauty, as I came to see how much of her love remained behind and would forever be golden.
Bottom line is as Nick said, do whatever you must, and don't be concerned with whether it looks right. I understand this is where the Jewish custom of draping every mirror in the house during mourning comes from.
