Yup, been there, done that.

I now remove my hatches when my boat will sit out in the sun all day. I added fillets of glass around the hooks (and especially underneath them) and they've held relatively well.

I've seen folks epoxy wood battens to the underside of the hatches to which you can screw a plastic or SS hook--these seem to work well, and spread the load over a much larger area.
