Hi Shaun. First off, welcome to the KBBS, you found the right place to start asking questions. No doubt you will succeed with models from either company. Pygmy doesn't supply plans for all their designs; some people like to build from plans instead of a kit. For general, flat water paddling you'll be okay with just about anything that floats I would pick a design that turns you on and just go with it. Then as you get into the sport more you will be drawn to your area of interest: i.e. tripping, rolling, paddling with your family, etc. and you may end up building a second boat. Most of us build two or three boats regardless of which model we start with. It's also good to attend kayak events and classes so you can begin to see all of the different possibilities.
