Well, I don't know... I did like the looks of my wooden dowel things, but they were a lot of bother to make, and then they had this sealing problem.

So, if my interpretation of this thread is more-or-less on the mark, then I think a re-working is in order: I want an inexpensive, easy to make repeatedly, and simple system that has no sealing issues. And, of course, it has to do the job. So looks are not important right now.

How about this?

It's a 1/8" stainless rod bent into the shape shown. It sits in a bed of thickened epoxy all the way to the topside of the base part. On top of that is a 1" square of 5-oz. S-glass that was 'threaded' over the rod, so as to completely surround it.

Think it'll work? Would a larger glass patch be an improvement? We won't know until tomorrow how much it'll hold.
