: Does anyone have experience using the US Composites with medium hardener(3:1
: ratio). The earlier post was the slow hardener and that was for use in
: warmer climates. Any experiences here in the NW or similar climate? I am
: attracted by the price, but don't want to compromise quality.
If you absolutely must save money on your next epoxy purchase and want to try the US Composite epoxy, get the slow hardener not the medium. I think if they are going to continue to sell their 3:1 medium, they need to tell their customers how badly it blushes and what steps to take to successfully use it. Epoxy on a boat that has taken months to assemble is not the place to save a few bucks. But this stuff (at their prices) is great for smaller projects and seems to work well both over and under Raka epoxy. They are very similar and seem quite compatible with one another.
: Is it "non-blushing?"
No, the medium blushes here in the Northwest, both inside the house and in outside conditions. The slow is slow, I mean real slow, but doesn't appear to blush like the medium does. Blush is not that bad, but it does require you to clean it off before you apply the next coat.
: I have used RAKA in the past with great results. Is this a case of you get
: what you pay for, or is US Composites a good deal.
You do get what you pay for, BUT the US Comp is a great deal, just order a small quantity and see for yourself. The 635 thin resin is clear, like crystal clear and smells a bit different than Raka. It bubbles when brushed on, but the bubbles disappear with a final stroke of the brush. Larry at Raka says that he adds something to his epoxy so that it doesn't bubble like the US Comp, but you do pay more for it. I can only recommend that anyone wanting to save money, try the US Comp on a test scrap or small project, it doesn't hurt to have some in your shop. It does work, it will eventually cure, just avoid the medium hardener if you don't want blushed surfaces to scrub or sand. At $86 for three gallons, it's hard to beat the price, and I will be ordering more of it when mine runs out, but for full sized kayaks - I'll stick with Raka. It's nice to have both, in fact add System Three to the list to be used for fillets and taping (much thicker). They all work, it's just personal preference.
