On my Outer Island I used grey high density foam (not neoprene) weather stripping that was sticky on one side and measured 3/16" X 3/8". I got it at Home Depot. To look at it you wouldn't think it would seal well ... between your fingers it squishes down to nothing and has a bit of a memory. But ... in use it seals just fine ... it doesn't compress as much because the surface area is much larger. I recessed my hatch flanges about 1/8" as I recall. You can fine tune your hatch surface by using a thicker/thinner and/or wider/skinnier gasket. The key to a good seal is to make sure the gasket extends past the hatch edge and/or hatch flange edge ... the gasket squishes over the edges and makes a better seal.
