Material: Luan ok for bulkhead?

ok, I know some people make whole boats out of Home Depot grade plywood, so I'm probably overly concerned. My question is, is there any quality issue with cutting a bulkhead from this material? More water damage if the epoxy is penetrated, less strength? I want to move the bow bulkhead aft several inches to cut down on flooded volume and possibly use it as a foot rest. The Pygmy-supplied precut is too small to move aft. I think they will send an oversize one, and I don't think the cost is much, I'd just rather cut it and get it in now if there is NO downside- otherwise, I'll wait for the right stuff.
Thanks for any advice.
