: is okume less brittle than luan?

Built my boat from okume, bulkheads and hatches from lauan. I'd say lauan is more brittle, but I can't quantify.

An odd aside: The lauan in 4x8 at my local Home Depot has a nice grain, but thin surface veneers and a fair number of voids. The stuff in the 1/4 sheet bins is good core, thick-veneered, but has one 'very' B face, and the A face needs pretty heavy sanding. You'd think they'd be the same stuff. Can we breed 'em?

Dan.
