: is okume less brittle than luan?

I use a 9 ply 1/2' okume for cabinet work and my son built a interlock shelf unit with it and we were amazed how brittle it was. I have used a 4mm certifed ply that I paid $70.00 for 10 years ago that seemed very tough. I think one is old growth and $$ and the other is plantation. I have not use HD luan for a kayak yet but use it all the time in houses, seems to be tough but soft, but so is the ply Pygmy gives with their kit. The HD stuff is for use under sheet vynal floors so it is to be exteriour grade glue.
