Now, don't spoil the man's hobbies. Have you considered an all-paper skin and skip the fiberglass? Someone in the 19th century famously built a paper canoe and voyaged a long way in it (Bishop?). Might need a few more stringers to prevent sagging as you build, say, a Kraft paper shell and then finish with maps, beer posters, movie posters or whatever (dollar bills would be extravagant, but cheaper than Kevlar).
