I'm not an expert by any means but someone who was an expert once told me that gelcoat does not air dry well. The best way to apply it is with a brush and then cover the surface with saranwrap or equivalent until it dries (I assume you could spray it also but you need to lock out the air after). If the area is small enough you can use scotch tape. After its set you can sand to fair then wetsand to pollish. I've used this technique a few times quite successfully.
