In Nicks book he recommends a fill coat to the deck before glassing, primarily to make it a little sturdier to handle. Other authors I have read suggest it is either not necessary or may cause some mounding around the staple holes. My gut feel is to use a fill coat because Nick's book has steered me true so far but I would appreciate the group's advice/experience.
