A few of the things I like on a throw bag are a wide neck so it stuffs quickly, some sort of loop it can be thrown by when the inevitable happens and you miss a throw and have to fill it with water to get the weight to throw it again quickly, a styrofoam disk in the bottom to provide extra floatation, no weights (don't like getting beaned by a weighted bag), the rope going through the bottom of the bag with a grab loop tied on the outside and a knot on the inside to keep the bag from sliding, draw string top (don't like buckles when my hands are cold). I prefer a belt rescue rope for all the time stuff but do prefer the bag when setting up safeties. Also prefer larger diameter rope for the throw bag -- throws farther and is easier on the hands of the swimmer and the thrower.

: I made my own in a short night, just buy some sturdy, floatable line at the
: hardware store, sew up a small bag, put a hole in the bottom, tie a weight
: inside, make a loop outside for someone to catch, and a loop on the other
: end to hold onto when you throw it.
: i'm using 50 ft cause i only paddle skinny rivers....
