Wilf,
I think it is a great idea. That being said, I don't know if it will work either..............so get out a piece of scrap, sand it the way you are going to do the boat, stain it and then epoxy it.
Some folks do a pull test. That is, epoxy fiberglass to the test board with some sticking up for a pull handle. Let the epoxy set over night, then give it a pull. If it rips off, forget about it and try something else. If it sticks, you have yor answer.
