Use thin bungee cord for it so you don't strangle or bind yourself in a capsize. On the ends, make a fixed loop with about a 3" long opening. on the end of the loop, fasten a small ball. (you can get wooden ones at crafts stores or even rubber.) 1" diameter or so. To fasten it to the paddle or front deck bungee, you just wrap the loop around the paddle or bungee and put the ball through it and give it a tug.
