I believe you have misunderstood me. I don't advocate building boats for minumum wage...just the opposite. I believe that such highly skilled work should bring top dollar. I stated what I believed one would have to charge simply to make, or approach, minumum wage. I also stated I will not do it for minumum wage. I believe there is a market for finely crafted S&G and strip built boats...but it will require time, effort, and marketing along with building a quality product to make any money at it. If/when I sell a boat I will charge enough compensation that makes ME happy. To restate...I will give the boat away to a special person...before I allow some stranger to steal it for minumum wage. The prices by Betsy Bay and Superior Kayak are certainly not out of line. Strippers SHOULD go for more...they involve much more time. People building boats for income are doing no one a service when they undercut those who are charging a fair price. I also believe that $10,000, $20,000, and even $30,000 for a strip built is not unreasonable considering the time and effort spent. But the fact remains you will not find one single POOR person who will buy one of these boats...regardless how bad he wants one. The price dictates targeting the rich people.
