I think the Tern 14 would work well for both of you. It tracks nice so it will make paddleing easy for you. It is also a boat you can advance your skills in. You won't regret getting this kayak. I was just out last week surfing in 2-5 foot waves and had a blast. Being short makes it playful but it lacks the speed of the longer kayaks.
