You'll find the paddle leash to be very handy when you are fishing, or doing anything that requires two hands.

My paddle leash is just a piece of black bungee cord with a plastic snap on the end (you'll be able to by this where you buy the bungee). I snap the end of the leash to my front deck rigging with a loop around the paddle. As for length, make it just long enough so you can lay your paddle across your rear deck to facilitate easy entry into and egress from you kayak. Any longer and it drags in the water beside the kayak as you paddle.
