Boat fit is largely mental. I just built a traditional Greenland SOF that is 18" wide at its widest point and 7" deep (probably 16" wide) in the toe area.
It was a snug fit in the Tern 14, but not uncomfortable. The biggest factor in boat fit is front bulkhead placement. If it's too close to the seat, us long-legged folks just plain can't fit.
I can fit in some very small boats if I can point my toes forward--which is more comfortable; instead of trying to keep my feet at a 90* angle to my lower leg--which both demands more space, more hamstring flexibility, and IMHO, more discomfort.
