Hey Richard! Saw your message the other day on the design side but didn't have any experience although I have done some woodburning and my mom used to be a real artist with one of those things. I think that it is a great idea. Although I did think of one thing just now which is why I replied.
When you epoxy the area of the woodburning you would have to apply a very thin coat I would think or else it would want to fill the recesses. I think you could apply it right so it would not but then when you go to glass I would think that you would not be able to keep the epoxy from going through the glass and filling the recesses. Just a concern....It seems valid but I only have my first timer experience with the stuff. If you are not creating a lot of recessed textures like say a ducks feathers or something similar then you could simply burn your lines into the wood and fill the recess with a contrasting color of wood filler or tinted epoxy thus creating a surface even with the rest of the deck and all the other concerns are gone.
Anyway, just my .02. Good luck and post pics if you do that, it would be interesting.

: Has anyone out there ever tried woodburning in lieu of veneer inlays for
: decoration? I don't think that it should pose a problem with epoxy or
: fiberglassing. Any thoughts
