Hi Tony. My boat is over 20' long and I get major overhang any way I do it. I've found that, going down the interstate, the bow will tend to get pushed to one side if I have the boat too far forward... so, from my experience, your instincts about the foam pad are correct. What I do is let most of the boat hang off the back of the car; like the others have suggested.
