: Greenland paddles are cheap and fast to make. Even a poor copy of one, made
: from a $3 construction grade 2x4 will move you through the water while you
: decide on what paddle you will eventually buy.
A really nice 2x4 is more likely to turn out well, and will be more fun to carve with hand tools. $15 is still far, far cheaper than any commercial paddle.
If you go the $3 2x4 route, explain to the guys at the lumberyard what you're doing, and hope they'll let you dig through the stack.
If you get a gnarly 2x4, using power tools like a hand planer or jointer will make the process of carving away "everything that doesn't look like a paddle" easier.
