I was one of five launches (including three courtesy of Mike Hanks' Disposable Skin Company) at the Doornink's Greenland Play Days. This was a most execllent event with over 30 boats and nearly as many people. John, Tess and the kids deserve a massive thanks for all of their work in putting together such a great event. The highlight was last night's midnight paddle with the Moon on one side, Mars on the other, seals swimming around and dinoflaggelates lighting up every stroke. A truly awesome experience!
As for the boat...it was a lot different than the Great Auk . My first hour was spent in a constant sculling brace and micro-butt corrections. Going forward was fine, but I was not stable enough to just relax when not moving. Many of the more experienced Greenland paddlers gave me the pitying smiles and choruses of "You'll get used to it". By today (Sunday) I could sit in relative peace and with minimum correction. I was able to roll it and it seemed easier than some of the other boats I have rolled. Compared to others, as it was sitting on the lawn near 15 or so similar boats, it has more rocker and more "V" to the hull than many of the others. A couple of people who tried it liked that aspect, a couple did not. I was pleased. It tracks reasonably well, but does not lock in too tight to turn well. I am going back to the drawing board with the seat, which needs a few modifications. The paddle park toggles worked really well.
Regards,
Marcel
