Both can be used for GPs. They are completely different tools. The pull blade is for removing large amounts of wood with a single pull. The spoke shave is basically a plane for rounding surfaces. After using both for making GPs I would reccommend both. However, you should practice extensively with the pull prior to working on the GP. It can ruin a piece of wood quickly. I would also reccommend that you read up on how to use the pull (re: wood grain, angle, safety, etc...).
A read a post on this BB a while back from someone who commented on using hand tools vs. power tools due to the sound of the wood being cut. At first I thought that was kinda silly until I built a GP using no power tools. There is something calming and inspiring about it. Since that 1st all hand tools GP, I have not gone back to the bandsaw/stationary disk sander for GPs.
I have a frind that makes knieves who is building me a curves pull blade like the wooden bowl makers use so I can slightly cup the blades of future paddles.
Hope this is helpful.
