I just bought a veritas spoke shave (about $42) and used it to make my first paddle. It is a great tool. It is the perfect thing for rounding the paddle shaft and any other tight cuts that the plane can't reach. The veritas is very solid (cast aluminum with brass knobs), adjusts easily (the blade adjusts rather than the foot) and the footplate reverses to work on convex/concave surfaces (it's a really nice feature).
