Both rudders and skegs are for going straight, altho some think a rudder is mainly for turning. You can turn faster with good paddling technique than any rudder system.
I can build a rudder (270 degree flip up to the back deck type) in about 1.5-2 hours. Easier than putting in a skeg box and no potential leaks.
I can't imagine anyone not learning how to use it with in a few minutes.
Also consider a small outside permanent skeg for tracking.
