I have had an idea that I am going to test when I get closer to the fiber glassing step. I am going to use colored, water based, stain (aniline dye?) on a tracing paper and then cut the tracing paper to shapes I want on the wood. I will then decoupage the shapes on to the wood with epoxy resin.
My hope is that the tracing paper will wet out translucent giving the appearance that the wood has been dyes or stained. You might want to give this a try.

: My wife would like me to dye a Canadian flag into the hatch cover of the new
: kit S&G I'm about to build for her. I'll also be dyeing the deck sheer
: panels and coaming lip but I'm not sure of a good technique to dye a sharp
: edged pattern onto the deck. I don't want any bleed through across the
: edge of the pattern. I've heard of scoring the pattern and using masking
: tape as well but I don't want to try something experimental for this since
: it will be so visible.
: Has anyone done this successfully and can you share how you did it?
