Put the first 2 coats on with a foam brush. That builds up a base which by itself will be the minimum
If you feel the need to improve on the looks at that point then sand lightly and put on another 2 coats with a rag.

Varnish can take a week or more to achieve maximum hardness. You don't want to try to buff it before then, or it may just smear. After a week of two of waiting for the varnish to dry you may decide you don't need to buff it.

Once the varnish has hardened for a while you might want to put on a light coat of wax and buff that.
