David,
Go visit your local Mitre 10 store, and get yourself a SANDVIK carbide scraper - it will cost you about A$30, but you will wonder what you did without it. Cabinet scrapers are good, but the carbide edge will work real well on the epoxy - lots less problems than sanding, and much more controllable.

- Consider scraping, not sanding. less mess/time
