Hello Steve: My thoughts, I have used a 88 Volvo 740 Wagon for the last 11 years. Have had everything from a 17' Canoe to 400lbs of lumber up on a set of Yakima Racks that hook on the rain gutters. You can set the bars almost 8' apart, and with the gutter mounts it's rock solid. I have over 240,000 miles on the car. It's a turbo so it has great power and I would not think twice about taking it on a 1000 mile trip with our two yaks (two 14') on top. It has a great tie down hook on the front and if you have a hitch on the back you have one there also.
